Van Meter Reelected County Board Chairman

Andy Van Meter was unanimously reelected as Chairman of the Sangamon County Board during its organizational meeting Tuesday night. Chosen for his leadership and ability to guide the board through complex challenges; Van Meter touts a proven record of fiscal responsibility, with a county tax rate lower than 25 years ago, all while expanding and improving county services.

Van Meter is the President of Design Ideas, a Springfield-based company he founded in 1982. The company employs 50 people locally and 25 overseas. He is a graduate of Springfield High School, Princeton University, and Stanford Law School. He has served as chairman since 2000

Tom Madonia Jr. was elected to serve his first full term as Vice Chairman of the board. He stepped into the role last year, following the departure of Lori Williams. Madonia has served on the board since 2014 and is the Chairman of the Collective Bargaining Committee and Vice Chair of the Finance Committee.

The minority party selected Tony DelGiorno as Floor Leader. DelGiorno, first elected to the County Board in 2014, is a graduate of Ursuline Academy, Illinois College, and American University’s Washington College of Law. He succeeds the late Clyde Bunch, who passed away on December 3 at the age of 88 after serving on the Sangamon County Board for 46 years.

Thirteen incumbent board members were sworn in Tuesday night. Following the November election, Republicans retain a 21-8 majority on the board.
