Springfield Fire Chief Announces Retirement

Springfield Fire Chief Edward Canny has announced his retirement, effective May 16, 2025, bringing to a close a nearly 28-year career with the Springfield Fire Department.

Appointed chief in 2023 by Mayor Misty Buscher, Canny has been recognized for his steady leadership and unwavering commitment to public safety and firefighter well-being. Throughout his career, he prioritized both the community he served and the firefighters he led.

"My time with the department is something I will always treasure," Canny said. "Being able to serve the citizens of Springfield has always been my passion. I am stepping away now to focus more on my family. There are some private family health matters that need more of my attention at this point in my life. I am fortunate that I can choose to retire at this time and ensure neither my family nor my responsibilities as Chief would be affected."

During his tenure as chief, Canny spearheaded advancements in emergency response, firefighter training, and department health initiatives. He was instrumental in the planning and opening of several new fire stations and championed department-wide cancer screenings to support firefighter health.

"I am confident that the department will be left in the hands of good leadership and will continue to move the Springfield Fire Department in the right direction," he added.

City officials say Chief Canny’s leadership and dedication will be remembered by colleagues and community members alike. A public celebration to honor his career is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
