SPD Officers Shoot Armed Suspect During Arrest Attempt

Springfield police shot a suspect after the individual fired at them during an attempted arrest, authorities confirmed.


Officers responded to a report of gunfire in the 1600 block of S. 16th Street at 5:41 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses told police that a person had fired shots from a vehicle, striking a nearby home. After gathering evidence, including shell casings, officers identified both the vehicle and the suspect responsible for the shooting.


The suspect was also wanted in connection with a recent robbery, according to police. At around 11:30 p.m., officers located the vehicle in the 1100 block of S. 18th Street, where they encountered several individuals inside. The front seat passenger was identified as the suspect from the earlier shooting incident.


When officers attempted to arrest the individual, the suspect fired a shot from a handgun near the officers. In response, one officer returned fire, striking the suspect.
