Scouting for Food Returns to Serve Local Families

The Abraham Lincoln Council of Scouting America is once again launching its annual "Scouting for Food" initiative, a council-wide service project aimed at combating hunger in Central Illinois. The effort will take place over two consecutive Saturdays in March, providing an opportunity for local Scouts to give back to their communities.

On Saturday, March 15, 2025, Scouts will distribute plastic grocery bags to homes across the region, informing residents about the food drive. The following Saturday, March 22, Scouts will return to collect donated canned goods and non-perishable items from participating households, delivering them to local food banks and pantries. Residents are asked to have their food donations placed outside by 9 a.m. for pickup.

"A Scout promises 'to help other people at all times.' There is no better way to show our Scouting spirit than by participating in the annual Scouting for Food drive," says Jeff Whitten, Scout Executive of the Abraham Lincoln Council. "This initiative exemplifies the Scouting values of being loyal, helpful, kind, and cheerful."

For the sixth consecutive year, Niemann Foods and County Market are sponsoring the Council’s Scouting for Food drive. Every store will be bagging groceries with details about this year’s initiative to help spread awareness.

Community members are encouraged to participate by filling a recycled grocery bag with canned goods and placing it on their doorstep for collection on March 22. The effort not only provides vital assistance to those in need but also instills values of responsibility and leadership in participating Scouts.

Scouting for Food is part of the national Scouting America program, "Good Turn for America," and is recognized as the organization’s leading service initiative.

The Abraham Lincoln Council has been serving the youth of Central Illinois since 1920, covering Sangamon, Menard, Christian, Montgomery, Macoupin, Morgan, Scott, Greene, and Cass counties. The Council operates a local service center and Scout Store south of I-55 and I-72, as well as Camp Illinek on Lake Springfield, Camp Bunn in Hettick, and the Freudenberg Scout Wilderness Area in Jacksonville.

Through Scouting, young people engage in outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and STEM programs while developing character, personal responsibility, and a commitment to service. The Scout Oath and Law remain at the core of the Scouting movement, guiding youth in making a meaningful impact in their communities.
