The Springfield Park District has partnered with KultureCity®, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting inclusivity for individuals with sensory needs, to achieve Sensory Inclusive™ certification. This initiative enhances accessibility at the Henson Robinson Zoo, the Nelson Center, and all programs and events hosted at these facilities.

The certification process involved specialized training for Springfield Park District staff, led by medical and neurodivergent professionals, to better accommodate individuals with sensory sensitivities and assist during sensory overload situations. Sensory sensitivities are common among individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD, and other conditions, making public spaces potentially overwhelming. KultureCity®’s program equips staff with the tools and knowledge to provide a more inclusive and comfortable experience for all visitors.

“Empowering communities through inclusion and innovation, the Springfield Park District aligns with KultureCity®’s vision of a world where every individual, regardless of ability, is embraced and celebrated for their unique contributions,” said Uma Srivastava, Executive Director of KultureCity®.

Families visiting the Henson Robinson Zoo or the Nelson Center can utilize resources like sensory bags filled with sensory-inclusive items, quiet areas, and headphone zones, all marked by designated signage. Visitors can also download the free KultureCity® App to preview sensory features and access a Social Story, offering guidance on what to expect during their visit.

"Ensuring that every member of the community feels welcomed and valued in parks, facilities, and events is a core mission of the Springfield Park District," said Leslie Sgro, President of the Springfield Park Board of Trustees. "Partnering with KultureCity® to achieve Sensory Inclusive™ certification is a critical step toward breaking down barriers and creating spaces where individuals with sensory needs can thrive. This partnership reflects an unwavering commitment to enriching lives through parks, people, and possibilities."

Since its founding in 2014, KultureCity® has certified over 1,800 sensory-inclusive venues worldwide, distributed nearly a million sensory bags, and collaborated with major organizations like the NFL, NBA, and FIFA. The organization’s impact extends beyond accessibility, including life-saving First Responder Training.

This collaboration supports the Springfield Park District’s mission to enrich lives and create meaningful opportunities for all members of the community, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and accessibility.
