Massey Commission Holds First Listening Session

The Sonya Massey Commission, established to address systemic issues in law enforcement practices, mental health responses, and community relations, held its first public meeting at Union Baptist Church. Co-chaired by Dr. Jerry Kruse, Dean and Provost of the SIU School of Medicine, and Pastor T. Ray McJunkins, pastor of Union Baptist Church, the commission welcomed over 100 community members to share their perspectives on its mission.

The Massey Commission was announced on August 16, 2024, by Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter and State Senator Doris Turner in response to the tragic killing of 36-year-old Sonya Massey by Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy Sean Grayson during a 911 call in July. Grayson has since been charged with murder and denied pre-trial release. The commission is committed to leading a process where the community can listen, learn, and take action.

Nearly 100 people attended the meeting, with around 20 speakers addressing the commission to voice concerns. Many comments focused on interactions with the Springfield Police Department and Sangamon County deputies, calling for more accountability and transparency in law enforcement. The co-chairs also announced that Nina Harris, Chair of the Illinois Commission on Equity and Inclusion, would step down from her role as co-chair, having completed her responsibilities in preparing the commission.
