Langfelder Concedes Recorder’s Race

Josh Langfelder conceded the Sangamon County Recorder’s race following a discovery recount, opting not to pursue a full recount. Republican Frank Lesko’s 31-vote victory over Langfelder, the county’s lone Democratic officeholder, will stand as final.

Langfelder shared his decision in a public statement Tuesday evening, thanking his supporters and explaining the rationale behind not moving forward:

"In review of the notes and findings my volunteers took during the discovery process, we came to the conclusion there is enough information to substantiate a change in the election totals for the Office of Sangamon County Recorder. After further discussion with my attorneys and understanding that the process could take over a year in the courts with an estimated cost in excess of $50,000, I have decided not to proceed with the petition.

I want to thank my volunteers who participated in the discovery process as well as the staff at the Sangamon County Clerk's Office. I also appreciate the support I received from the community."

Langfelder’s claims about potential changes in vote totals reflect his campaign’s perspective, based on reports from his volunteers and supporters during the discovery process, and have not been independently verified by a judge or election staff.

Frank Lesko, who campaigned on a platform to eliminate the Recorder’s Office and merge it with the County Clerk’s Office to save taxpayer money, will now assume the Recorder’s role full-time. He plans to resign as Springfield City Clerk on Friday, with his resignation taking effect next Tuesday.

Lesko expressed gratitude for the support he received and shared his enthusiasm for the new role: “I want to thank the voters of Sangamon County for placing their trust in me. I’m excited to get to work and serve our community as County Recorder, ensuring we operate efficiently and effectively for everyone. I’m also eager to begin working on plans to merge the Recorder’s Office with the County Clerk’s Office, saving taxpayer money while maintaining excellent service.”
