Jeff Cox was confirmed at the city council meeting on February 18 to fill the vacant Ward 1 aldermanic seat in Springfield. Cox, who was selected by Mayor Misty Buscher to succeed Chuck Redpath, will serve until the regularly scheduled election in 2027.
Cox is an attorney and currently serves as vice president of compliance for a cannabis company. His professional background includes assisting the Illinois Department of Agriculture in launching the state’s medical and adult-use cannabis programs and working as an assistant Sangamon County State’s Attorney.
City officials reported that sixteen individuals applied for the Ward 1 vacancy, but only twelve met the residency requirement. Ward 1 includes Springfield neighborhoods situated around Lake Springfield.
Redpath resigned from his position as alderman to assume the role of city clerk.
