Zoo Lovers Day, celebrated annually on April 8, is a time for animal enthusiasts to enjoy and appreciate wildlife at zoological parks worldwide. In Springfield, the Henson Robinson Zoo is once again welcoming visitors after reopening for the season on April 5.

The Henson Robinson Zoo began as the dream of Henson C. Robinson, a prominent Springfield citizen who envisioned a space where the community could connect with wildlife. In 1967, the City of Springfield donated land to the Springfield Park District to fulfill Robinson’s vision. Construction began in 1968, and the zoo officially opened on August 29, 1970.

Since its founding, the zoo has grown to house over 96 species of animals from around the globe, including species native to Australia, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Visitors can observe animals such as African Penguins, Eurasian Vultures, African Painted Dogs, American Black Bears, Cougars, Spider Monkeys, Langurs, Boa Constrictors, Naked Mole Rats, and Lemurs in naturalistic exhibits.

Starting April 5, the zoo is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through October 31, with last admission sold at 4:30 p.m. Admission fees are as follows:

  • Adults (13–61): $7.50

  • Children (3–12) & Seniors (62+): $5.50

  • Children 2 & Under: Free

In addition to being a family-friendly destination, the zoo plays an active role in conservation efforts and scientific research, making it a vital resource for wildlife preservation and education.
