Robert "Bob" Kent Gray, a respected educator, community leader, and co-founder of the Citizens Club of Springfield, passed away on September 23, 2024, at the age of 84. A resident of Springfield, Gray was known for his civic dedication and long-standing involvement in local government and public service.
Born in West Frankfort, Illinois, on March 22, 1940, Bob moved to Springfield in 1967 and quickly established himself as a key figure in state politics, retiring in 2002 after a distinguished career. In addition to his role with the Citizens Club, Gray served as President of the Springfield and Illinois Jaycees and was a long-time Republican Precinct Committeeman. He was recognized as Springfield's First Citizen in 2009 and inducted into the Illinois Jaycees Hall of Fame in 2022.
Gray is survived by his son, Kent, and grandsons, Harrison and Oliver. A funeral ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 29, with visitation following at Butler Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Citizens Club of Springfield.
