State Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) has introduced legislation aimed at increasing opportunities for military recruitment in Illinois high schools. House Bill 3208 seeks to amend the School Code to require school boards to invite recruitment representatives from the armed forces to hold at least one recruitment event per year.
“I think it’s important we provide high school students with more opportunities to gain understanding of joining the military and the benefits that come from serving the Illinois armed forces,” Coffey said. “Students can learn about the benefits that veterans receive such as property tax exemptions, education and tuition assistance, as well as hunting, fishing licenses and state park camping privileges.”
Coffey also noted that while military service may not be the right choice for every student, increasing awareness of available options is essential.
“Joining the military is not for everyone, but the more information provided to students can help them decide if it’s right for them. At the very least, students should know of all the options that are available to them after high school,” he added.
Recent data indicates a positive trend in military recruitment. In fiscal year 2024, the U.S. Army exceeded its recruiting goal by enlisting over 55,000 active-duty soldiers, a significant turnaround from previous years' shortfalls. Similarly, the Illinois Army National Guard surpassed its recruitment targets, signing up 35,013 new soldiers against a goal of 34,140.
The Air National Guard also reported success, recruiting 8,845 new airmen, exceeding its target of 8,495. These improvements are attributed to initiatives like the "Future Soldier Prep Course," which provides academic and fitness instruction to help potential recruits meet military standards.
The Illinois armed forces include the Illinois Air National Guard, the Illinois Army National Guard, and the Illinois Department of Military Affairs. House Bill 3208 is expected to be considered during the upcoming legislative session.
